Northern Alps Art Festival 2024

Northern Alps Art Festival 2024

I’m pleased to announce I’ll be part of the Northern Alps Art Festival 2024, the third edition of the event, which will be held from 13 September to 14 November 2024 in Omachi, Nagano, Japan.

Omachi in Nagano Prefecture is an area located at the bottom of Northern Alps, the center of the island of Japan, overlapping of mountain air and village life. It is the site of remains from the late Jomon era (3,500 years ago) and it was a flourishing post town on the 120-kilometer Sengoku Kaido salt road from the Japan Sea to inland areas in the Muromachi era (1336-1573). In the 1960s of high economic growth period, the Kurobe Dam, one of the largest civil engineering projects in Asia, was completed, marking a significant point in the modern history of Japan. However, Omachi now faces the issues of an aging population, and a decreasing number of children, and it is listed as a city at risk of disappearing.

With “Water, Tree, Earth, and Sky” as the theme, the Northern Alps Art Festival is focused on art and the artists’ collaboration with the land, and unlocking the potential of the local area, along with their surrounding climate and natural features, in response to urban cities.

The Northern Alps Art Festival 2024, which I am inviting you to participate in, was planned with a similar mission: with the landscape of the Northern Alps visible from Omachi and the unique elements of “Water, Trees, Earth, and Sky” of the area in mind, showing the charm of Omachi. Its visitors will wander into the area and encounter site-specific artwork inspired by the land.
